Kilfamma was the first of 3 houses we built near Thomastown in Co Kilkenny, Ireland.  It came with a mile of salmon fishing on the River Nore which flowed along its western boundary.  All our holidays and spare time were spent in these houses over 13 years.

I have shown the original building with the neglected state of the land sloping down from it to the river.  The image Is taken from a still of a 1989 camcorder video.  Even so it gives a clear impression.

We created bays, refaced the exterior with brickwork and reorganised the internal rooms.  Bricks were imported from Freshfield Lane Brickworks in Sussex and we designed the red rubber arches made by Lambs near Midhurst.  These can be seen in the image of the completed building.  The thin brickwork mortar joints were dyed deep brown/black so as to keep a consistent colour for the elevation.

The bays have gothic glazing bars and we intended to – but did not - erect a verandah along the terrace between the 2 side bays similar to that which we erected at Motcombe some 8 years later.  The slope down to the river was terraced as shown.

We built this as the Lodge at the roadside end of the avenue to Kilfamma.  It worked well as a design with the recessed arches and reveals above the large windows to ground level and the shallow roof pitch and high chimneys to lend vertical thrust.

The boiler house is perhaps the nicest thing I have done.
